Struggling with harmful alcohol use, unresolved trauma and uncertainty about where to turn, he reached a breaking point.
Then he made one brave decision that changed everything: he asked for help.
Patrick first connected with Primary Care Connect just over 12 months ago through the Youth Outreach Program while living at the Foyer.
After stopping cannabis use, he found himself relying more heavily on alcohol to cope.
“It became a Band-Aid — a Band-Aid for my weed use but also a Band-Aid for some trauma I was holding,” Patrick said.
Unsure of what to expect but willing to try, Patrick took that first step and began working with youth outreach worker Ashlee Kenny.
Through consistent, non-judgmental support, he slowly rebuilt his confidence and developed healthier coping strategies.
“The support gave me the courage and gusto I needed. It helped me learn that I can heal from past traumas,” Patrick said.
In October, he reached a major milestone by moving into his own home, creating a safe and welcoming space where he can now care for his six-year-old daughter.
While recovery has not been without challenges, Patrick said he now had the tools to manage difficult moments without turning to substances.
Today, he is giving back to the community, working at the Salvos refuge supporting people experiencing homelessness.
“I help with resumes, job searches and connecting people with services. It’s a really good feeling giving back,” he said.
Ashlee said Patrick’s journey showed what was possible with the right support.
“In such a short time, Patrick is working, has his own home and is connected with his daughter. It’s inspirational, and I hope other young people see his story and know help is here,” she said.
Patrick said he hoped sharing his story would encourage others to reach out.
“Substance use is like a Band-Aid — if left on too long, it only gets worse. I’m so thankful for the support I received,” he said.
Primary Care Connect reminds the community that help is available and that reaching out can be the first step towards change.
