A love for knitting and crochet that began as a lifeline during COVID-19 lockdowns has now become a livelihood for Shepparton’s Danielle Beckley.

After teaching herself to crochet, Ms Beckley began selling craft supplies at local markets before turning her passion into a permanent craft store.
The Twisted Stitcher will open in Wyndham Mall on Thursday, August 27, stocking yarn, craft materials and handmade goods.
“I taught myself to crochet during COVID because the lockdowns were driving me crazy and I just needed something to keep myself busy,” she said.
“Instead of sitting on the couch doom-scrolling, you’re creating something with your hands.
“It’s so good for your mental health.”
She said crafts soon became an obsession.
“I was always knitting something. I was always crocheting something, and then living in Shepparton, I just realised there’s nothing specialised here.”
Seeing a gap, Ms Beckley set up a market stall in October 2025.
Since then, she has attended four to six local markets each month, using the experience to learn what local customers want.
“I don’t just want to sell you something for the sake of selling you something. I want to sell you something that you’re going to love, use and cherish.”
After months on the market circuit, Ms Beckley said she was excited to have a permanent bricks and mortar home for her business.
“Having a shop was always the goal,” she said.
Knowing what a comfort craft can bring, Ms Beckley started a Craft Club for the Goulburn Valley, giving local creatives a place to connect and share their interests.
The new store will become the club’s permanent home.
“I just want it to be a welcoming environment, very inclusive, where people can come in and feel comfortable,” she said.
“It’s going to be a really cosy and ... a little bit of a refuge.
“People do want that sense of community.”
Ms Beckley hopes to build on that community by eventually offering workshops in knitting, crochet and specific techniques.
“The thing that I love about knitting and crochet is that anybody can do it, it doesn’t discriminate,” she said.
“I’ve had young boys come and buy yarn … and then you’ve got people from the older generation who have been doing it for decades, and everyone in between.”
The Twisted Stitcher will open from 10am to 5pm on Thursday, August 27, at 7/294 Wyndham St, Shepparton.
