To address homelessness in the region, the group recently distributed 60 backpacks filled with essential items to Salvo Care, Beyond Housing and the Shepparton South Community Centre.
Shepparton Soroptimist member Jill Pinner said many women experiencing homelessness were in crisis, yet hidden from sight.
“They may have shelter, but not a permanent place to call home — they could be sleeping in a car, couch-surfing, or enduring the night on public buses,” she said.
“In Shepparton, we have many people who are homeless, sleeping in tents between Shepparton and Mooroopna along the river.”
The donated backpacks contain vital supplies such as towels, toiletries and even microwave bowls, which were generously provided by Big W, saving the volunteer organisation $300.
However, there is still more to be done.
The Shepparton Soroptimists are urging the community to provide further support by donating new items that can be included in the backpacks.
