“I definitely feel like this is me working at my full potential,” Baxter said.
“This EP is like four different sides of myself, and I’m really proud of each one.”
While their first EP, you wouldn’t expect cupid to cry, carefully navigates a journey of self-discovery, STARGIRL is more expansive and audacious.
How so?
Each track is charged with spectacular little choices, from the pulsing club beats on TAIPEI DREAMS, in which one can lose track of time, to the carefree crescendo on SUSPICIOUS that pricks the ears.
CAMBOY alone was enough to start an internet stampede, amassing over 41,000 views on YouTube within weeks of the music video release.
The song critiques how our rapid taps of the thumb open a gateway to search, scroll and ultimately perceive others online — an experience Baxter said resonated with their audience.
“It’s something a lot of people experience but maybe don’t know how to put a name to it because it’s a feeling,” they said.
“We live in an era where we perceive so much about people based on their appearances and their output on social media, but it’s all curated … they’re a complete stranger.”
Baxter is no stranger to Shepparton.
For 21 years, the artist lived in the region and continues visiting both in person and in creativity.
Their track WEEDKILLER serves as a heartfelt ode to their best friend left behind when they moved to the city to chase their pop star dreams.
“We spent our whole lives growing up in Shepparton talking about how we were going to make this life as good as it could be,” Baxter said.
“Whenever I go back, I appreciate seeing people, putting on events, and trying to keep live music and art alive in Shepparton.
“A big shout-out to everyone in Shepparton who is keeping art alive, regardless if it’s through fashion, music, dance, all that.”
Whether hosting arts events in the Goulburn Valley or selling out headline shows across the country, Baxter continues to serve — the spicier, the better.
