The Group 3 race will headline a bumper 12-race card at the local track.
It will be a significant night for not only the club but for the families of five prominent greyhound stalwarts.
The club announced during the week the introduction of five memorial races to honour some of the industry’s greats.
The memorial races will be named after former Shepparton Greyhound Club member Les Harris, along with Keith Warburton, Kel Tremellen, Doug Ferremi and Alec Reid.
“We are really proud to introduce these five memorial races,” club manager Carl McGrath said.
“It’s a nice way to honour these five local participants who gave so much to not only our club but also the entire greyhound industry.
“The Warburton and Tremellen family names are synonymous here. Doug trained Hall of Fame greyhounds while Alec is on the Victorian Hall of Fame.”
McGrath said it was only fitting to honour Harris, who passed away earlier this year, with a memorial race after his lengthy contribution to the club.
“Les worked at the club for many years. He was a very popular and loved member here,” he said.
“It’s only fitting that we have a race named after him to honour his contribution to the club.
“It’s a shame that we can’t have crowds; It would have been great to have families and friends in attendance.”
Although crowds won’t be there to soak up all of the action, that doesn’t mean the Northern Districts Cup won’t be a captivating event.
A full field of eight runners will be gunning to claim the winner’s $25,000 prize.
Locally-owned greyhound My Name’s Stacey is one of the favourites.
Jumping from the yellow box, My Name’s Stacey is trained by Tolleen’s Rod Clark.
Clark will be gunning for back-to-back victories in the Northern Districts Cup after he clinched last year’s instalment with Sonny Daze.
“It’s always nice to have these big races on the card,” McGrath said.
“One of the big chances (My Name’s Stacey) is actually named after a staff member here at the club. The owner (Allan Ferguson) is from Girgarre.”
McGrath also thanked the club’s sponsors for their continued support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s fantastic to still have our sponsors stick with us even though they can’t get down there and watch,” he said.
“It’s been a really difficult couple of years for everybody and we appreciate the support.”
