The Broncos play the Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday afternoon and Walters is fresh from one of his best games of the season in the 32-10 win over the Sydney Roosters.
The 29-year-old has been leaning on former Manly rake Matt Ballin, who won the 2011 premiership with the Sea Eagles and is now Brisbane's assistant coach.
"(Ballin) worked a lot in the pre-season with us on our deception which is a big part of the number nine role these days in the NRL," Walters said.
"If I need help with anything he is one of the first I go to.
"You look at the best hookers in the game and it is Harry Grant and Api Koroisau and they are the best at their craft. They look like they are doing one thing, but do another.
"Sometimes I trick the markers but I am that slow that they catch me anyway. Maybe I've got to work on my speed a little bit more."
Walters ran strongly against the Roosters but said he still needed to find the happy medium of when to pass and run. Half Adam Reynolds, fullback Reece Walsh and prop Payne Haas also like to make the most of momentum.
"That is what I am trying to balance at the moment because in my head whenever there is a fast play-the-ball that is when I want to get out and run," he said.
"At the same time that is when Walshy, Reyno and Payne are at their most dangerous. Hopefully we can get that (balance) right for the finals and we will be pretty dangerous."
The Broncos are second on the NRL ladder with 34 points, while the Cowboys are clinging to eighth position on 26 points after a disappointing 22-13 loss to Gold Coast.
"Queensland derbies are always pretty hard, especially up there. We got the wood on them (in a 28-16 win) at the start of the year," Walters said.
"They are one of the form teams of the competition. They had a bit of a hiccup on the weekend but that is probably going to make it tougher for us."
North Queensland and NSW hooker Reece Robson left the field with a head knock against the Titans. If he plays on Saturday then Walters said he would have his work cut out.
"He is a tough little bugger and really gives it to our forwards when he is tackling them," Walters said.
"He has got his running game right where he knows when to run and when to dish it off to Drinky (fullback Scott Drinkwater). We have to nullify his impact on the game."
