Olmo shines as Leipzig win 5-1 away to reach cup final

Dani Olmo has scored the first and set up three others as 10-man title holders RB Leipzig triumphed 5-1 at Freiburg to reach the German Cup final for the fourth time in five years.

In a rematch of the 2022 final which Leipzig had also won, on penalties, Spain international Olmo headed Marcel Halstenberg's cross into the bottom far corner 13 minutes into the game.

Less than two minutes later Olmo set up defender Benjamin Henrichs to fire into the same right corner for a commanding 2-0 advantage.

And it was 4-0 at half-time against a poor Freiburg defence when a one-two between Olmo and Dominik Szoboszlai allowed the latter to slot home the 36th, and Christopher Nkunku converted Olmo's sharp cross for the fourth.

Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol was sent off in the 58th after a video review for a last-man foul on Roland Sallai.

Freiburg, who had ousted record winners Bayern Munich in the previous round, managed to pull only one goal back from Michael Gregoritsch's header in the 75th, before Szoboszlai converted a penalty for the final score in the last action of the game.

In the June 3 final in Berlin, which Gvardiol will now miss, Leipzig face VfB Stuttgart or Eintracht Frankfurt who contest the other semi-final on Wednesday.
