Police said the resident immediately followed up with the banks and confirmed they had made no such attempts to open the accounts.
Both accounts were closed immediately.
Investigations into the incidents will be handled by the banks, but Deniliquin Police said it was a timely reminder to check all correspondence from your bank for any irregularities.

A 29 year-old man is to appear in court after allegedly refusing to comply with a secondary impaired driving test.
Police say the man was driving a Victorian registered car in Crispe St, Deniliquin when stopped for random drug testing about 7.50pm on February 27.
Police allege the man tested positive for methamphetamines at the roadside, resulting in his being detained for secondary testing at the Deniliquin Police Station.
Once at the station, the man reportedly refused.
He was suspended from driving for 24 hours due to the results of the roadside teat, and charged with refusing to supply a sample.

A 32 year-old man has been charged with trespassing, possession of a prohibited drug and custody of a knife in public after allegedly running from police on February 26.
Police said they were patrolling in Hardinge St about 11.30am when a man appeared to start running after spotting the police car.
Based on their suspicions, police followed and allege the man jumped a fence in to the rear yard of a Napier St home to avoid officers.
He was spotted a short time later on Napier St and stopped and searched.
Police allege to have found a pocket knife and a white crystal substance in the man;s possession.
