Nagambie’s beloved Discovery Parks reopens, boosting local tourism and spirits

Regional Operations Manager Sean Goggin said the past year and a half has been tough for the park and the rest of the region.

“As a major tourism provider in the region, you know how important tourism economy is to Nagambie,” he said.

“It’s been a challenging couple of summers without the usual volumes of business coming through our parks and supporting those local businesses in the community.

Kellie Bennet from Bendigo enjoyed what the park had to offer before it got inundated.

She said she was devastated by the news when the park was flooded.

“We’d stayed in the cabins, and we’ve had our kayaks just out the front, and the kids were playing on the river bank,” she said.

“(We’re) really emotional because we’ve had so many lovely family memories here.”

But now, she’s back again to enjoy the new and improved Discovery Parks - Nagambie Lakes.

This time, submerged cabins during the floods were rebuilt with taller foundations to lift them higher.

This way, high flood waters would not reach the cabins.

Ms Bennet said she eager to see the improvements and differences after the flood.

“We’re just looking forward to supporting the local economy,” she said.

“Check out the wineries and the distilleries.”

Ms Bennet’s son, Spencer, said he looks forward to going to the wineries with his mother and their family friends.

All activities, like the boat ramp, cafe, and pools, are now open to all guests.

Mr Goggin thanked the whole team for their role and hard work in restoring the park.

“It’s been really difficult for our team, and they’ve just been so instrumental in the recovery process and dedicated to getting the park back up and running as soon as possible so we can thank you enough,” he said.

“We are just so thrilled to be back open again and welcome back tourists to Nagambie.”
