The Haisman Shield round 12 contest looked destined to be heading towards an Eagles triumph at the halfway mark — but someone forgot to tell the Jets.
Resuming at 2-39 chasing a victory target of 113, Katandra added just three runs to its total before falling into a collapse of 8-47 to be all-out for 89.
Not for the first time this season it was Joel Brett's bowling efforts that sparked the Jets, snaring half of the Katandra wickets to fall on day two and finishing with figures of 4-31 from 18 overs.
Josh Sidebottom (2-11) and Zane Newbound (1-24) also helped the cause, while Trent Sidebottom (3-14) came on to finish the job at Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve after taking two wickets on day one.
“They did perform well, Josh and Joel opened up and bowled really well,” Northerners coach Steve Allen said.
“They took a couple of early wickets to put the pressure on them and never really let up.
“It was a really good team performance with the ball and in the field.
“Joel bowled for pretty much their entire innings on day two, he did really well.”
Scott Richardson (32 from 55 deliveries) and Scott Dickson (14 not out) did what they could for the Eagles with bat in hand, but it was not enough to snare success.
Northerners faced 35 overs after claiming first-innings points, with Darcy Collins (58 not out from 103) and Rhiley Lau (39) steering the side to 3-143.
Hadleigh Sirett sent down five maidens for figures of 1-0, while Jedd Wright (1-25) and Ben Clurey (a run-out) were also among the wickets for the Eagles.
The Jets are now assured of finals action and face Old Students next round in an attempt to climb the table once more ahead of finals, while Katandra takes on Karramomus as it searches to secure a home final.
“It certainly gives us a lot of momentum moving into finals, it was good to get a bat in the afternoon as well for a few boys to spend some time in the middle,” Allen said.
“It's definitely important to keep the ball rolling next week.”
THE GAME
Northerners 112 (Glen Davidson 29, Andrew Boyington 22, Scott Dickson 4-20) and 3-143 (Darcy Collins 58 not out, Rhiley Lau 39. Hadleigh Sirett 1-0) d Katandra 89 (Scott Richardson 32, Joel Brett 4-31, Trent Sidebottom 3-14).
STAR PLAYER
Joel Brett (Northerners): The Jets produced a stirring bowling performance on day two of the clash to pull a rabbit — and victory — out of a hat, and Brett was the spearhead. The all-rounder claimed 4-31 to rip the heart out of Katandra's middle order.
