These system checks assess the uniformity of irrigation water application, pump performance and the design of the irrigation system.
The aim of the program is to help farmers use water more efficiently and improve crop yields, increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Precision pressurised irrigation systems, such as centre pivots, give farmers greater control over their water management.
However, problems can arise if the system is not working properly or has not been designed to suit the task and in these instances irrigation scheduling becomes difficult, yields are reduced, and operating costs are higher.
Through completion of an irrigation system assessment, Agriculture Victoria can help identify practical ways to improve the design and operation of irrigation systems.
Following a recent irrigation system assessment, one farmer made changes to better match irrigation application rates to the pumping system, at a cost of about $300, which reduced energy costs by $2500 to $3000 a year — or $40,000 over the life of the system.
This allowed the farmer to irrigate a larger area more efficiently and confidently than previously possible, and improved the bottom line and stress levels during the peak of summer.
This irrigation assessment program is available in the Goulburn Broken, north-central and north-east catchment regions.
To participate in the irrigation system assessment program or for any other advice on irrigation management, contact Nick O’Halloran at the Agriculture Victoria Tatura office on 5833 5222.
The program is free, but subject to availability and can be restricted by weather conditions and crop stage of development.
