Kyabram bowlers Josh Cartwright and Charlie Boswood were at the forefront of a dominant showing from the Vic squad last weekend at Sorrento Bowls Club.
Off the back of these efforts Victoria would be rewarded with the Overall Boys’ Team Trophy and a second-place finish in the Overall Team Trophy, narrowly beaten out by NSW.
The GV boys formed half of the fours contingent that would finish runner-up to NSW, but achieved gold success separately in other team events.
Boswood, already in the state team at age 13, took out the boys’ pairs title alongside Koby Cromie, while Cartwright combined with Will Mays and Nick Rowley to form Victoria’s champion boys’ triples team.
Cartwright’s mother, Naomi Cartwright, gleefully expressed her pride in their achievements.
“We’re extremely proud of what they did,” Naomi said.
“Josh put in a massive effort the last 12 months to improve his game, mentally as well.”
In the boys’ category, Josh would also receive Victoria’s Player of the Championship.
“To see him recognised made me a bit teary, I reckon,” Naomi said with a laugh.
“I think he was surprised to get it, but he was also quite chuffed.”
The Cartwright family is becoming synonymous with success on the lawns, if not already considered as such.
Elder sister Olivia, 19, will soon be due to participate in her own Victorian representative outing in Perth.
Don’t be fooled by the seemingly laid-back nature of the sport, though.
Tournament play commenced at 8.30am on game day with finals concluding at 8.30pm, a mammoth shift for the juniors.
Now, the focus turns to potential future accomplishments.
“The Victorian under-18 coach recognised their improvements the past six to 12 months, and I know Josh has put his name among the men’s open team going forward,” Naomi said.
“Charlie’s only 13, so it’s a huge accomplishment to have made the Vic team at that age.
“He was the youngest on the team and his maturity on the green goes far beyond his years.”
