It was a sensational day for Hill Top on Sunday with both men's and women’s pennant teams winning their finals at Shepparton.
Not only that, but Scott Carter and Andrew Wills scored 50 stableford points to win the men’s section of the Golf Victoria Four-ball at Hill Top and will go on to Sorrento and The National for the final.
Hill Top’s West team beat Hill Top’s East team in their semi-final last week to be able to take on Kialla-Cosgrove in the final at Shepparton on Sunday.
Wins to Scott Perry-Josh Danaher, Jonno Kerrins-Michael Mulcahy and Linc and Bryce Wellington and losses to Dylan Burls-Col Barlow and Daniel Maher-Jake Chessells gave Hill Top a 3-2 pennant win for a team young enough to be competitive for many years.
Perhaps even better, Hill Top’s women defeated Shepparton on their own course despite some Hill Top players never having played at Shepparton before.
Larysa Phillingham and Paula Wills won their first four holes, were one-down after 10, but recovered to win 2-1.
Sheryl Curran and Mandy McGrath squared their match, but a 3-1 win to Bev Roberts and Bec Jeffers gave Hill Top a great win.
Saturday: Mike Jeffers won the Privilege Cup, sponsored by Peppermill Shepparton, with 41 stableford points off a 26 handicap.
Mick Mulcahy won A-grade with 37 points on a countback from Linc Wellington, Travis Worm won B-grade with 40 points, Ian Elders was runner-up with 39 and Brendan Ryan was runner-up in C-grade with 38 on a countback.
Consolation balls went to Dale McNair, Andrew Cleary and Rocci Villani 38, Peter Collison 37, Bruce Gross, Glen Pearce and Jarrod Taylor 36 points.
Bev Roberts won the women’s competition with 36 points off a 25 handicap, Joan Hill was runner-up with 34 and line-balls went to Judy Baker and Janette Hayward 33 points.
Midweek: James Ibbotson won Tuesday’s stableford competition with 37 points off a 15 handicap, Graham Ellis was runner-up with 36 on a countback and line-balls went to Garry Reese 36, Bryan Miller 35 and Frank Hill 34.
Ty Guiney won on Thursday with 39 stableford points off a five handicap, Lou Villani was runner-up with 35 and consolation balls went to Steve Allison and Peter Hutton 34 and to Glen Pearce 33 on countback.
Mat Langley Twilight: The annual Cross Country event and Dale Clarke on-course barbecue was held Thursday evening with a good field of brave golfers having many laughs, although course designer David Roberts was accused of being devious by acouple of players.
Rocco Barca won the event with 26 nett, and at presentations coped with a barrage of comments from his mates for having an advantage because he always plays his golf just like cross country.
Scott Perry was close behind with 27 nett and Brian Miller and Darren Carter on28 nett.
Helen Murdoch had the best score for the ladies with 29 nett ahead ofJosie Deieso with 30.
The highly sanitised nearest the pins went to Dan Miller and Rocco Barca.
Special thanks must go to Mr Clarke for keeping the field of players nourished with his great barbecued sausages, although the last group (Ryano, Robbie, Johno and Sam) who got lost in the dark are still hungry!!!
Coming events: Next weekend is our Labour Day Weekend Tournament with a four-ball stableford event for men and for women on Saturday and Sunday with trophies for single day and two-day winners.
On Monday there is a single stableford event with a 10am shotgun start.
Bookings are to be made online or through the clubhouse.
Shocker: John Fanning uses a remote-controlled buggy which saves him a lot of pushing, but they can be a trap for the unwary.
On the 16th on Saturday, as he was approaching the 17th tee, he was distracted by one of the golfers asking whether their ball was on or off the green.
Left to its own devices, the buggy plus clubs lumbered off over the tee and headed for the car park where chef’s car was parked behind the chain.
Fanno was alerted to the looming catastrophe just as his buggy reached the car and quickly put it into reverse.
Unfortunately, the clubs caught up in the chain and the whole unit tipped over to everyone’s amusement except the owner.
