The Tallygaroopna product has inked a one-year extension to remain at Collingwood following a season of near career-best form, as the Magpies enter the hunt for a second flag in three seasons.
Sidebottom, who has averaged 21.7 disposals per game, 3.3 clearances, and 4.1 tackles per game this season, has pushed beyond the stereotypical twilight years of an AFL veteran and remains a key cog to Collingwood’s premiership push.
The two-time premiership Pie signed alongside veteran defender Jeremy Howe to enter an 18th AFL campaign.
The former Murray Bushrangers talent recently crossed the 350-game milestone, becoming just the second Collingwood player to do after teammate Scott Pendlebury.
Ahead of the aforementioned career feat, Sidebottom spoke with The News about his future, noting his keenness to play on in 2026.
“Once I get to the stage I don’t think I can contribute to the footy club and, maybe I’m being a little bit of a burden on the place, then I’ll be happy to retire and get out of there, but at the moment I still feel like I’ve got something to give and it’s nice the club thinks the same thing as well,” Sidebottom said.
“People think that once you get over 30 that your time is done ... I think age is kind of irrelevant, if you’re good enough you’re good enough, whether you’re 17 or 35.”
Collingwood list boss Justin Leppitsch was rapt the experienced heads would continue on for at least another 12 months.
“(Sidebottom and Howe) bring an incredible amount of experience and knowledge to our side, and are highly regarded people throughout the club,” Leppitsch said.
“On and off the field, Steele and Jeremy are both instrumental figures within our program, setting the standards and leading the way for their fellow teammates.
“With both already having incredible careers, we look forward to ‘Sidey’ and ‘Howey’ continuing to play a significant role in our side and guiding our next generation of young talent.”
