Travelling to Longwood Recreation Reserve in an attempt to snap their losing streak, the Kangaroos were well-and-truly in the game through the first quarter.
Both sides kicked three majors to open their accounts, but it was the Redlegs’ extra chances that gave them a three-point advantage at quarter-time.
Longwood began to exert its force on the match, nailing five goals throughout the second period, while Girgarre settled for a smattering of behinds and one goal before half-time.
The Kangaroos refused to let go in the third term with a 4.3 effort keeping them in the hunt, but they were only able to shave a point off the lead as Longwood kept up with four goals of its own.
Unfortunately for the Girgarre faithful, the side will have to wait another week to get back into the winners column, as the Redlegs took over down the stretch.
The Kangaroos could only offer 1.4, as Longwood did enough (3.4) to notch a 35-point victory at home.
The final score was Girgarre 9.13 (67) to Longwood 15.12 (102).
Bill Barnes was stellar in front of goal for the Kangaroos, booting seven goals, with Longwood’s Rhys Cason (7) matching him.
For his efforts, Barnes was named best alongside Steven Phillips, Jorge Maxwell, Joseph Jackson, Riley Morris and Byron Dryden.
We’ll have to wait until next week to see if Girgarre can turn its season around against Rushworth in round nine.
