Emerging youth products Charlie Boswood and Mackenzie Parsons, who have enjoyed their fair share of success already at the Bombers, have received fresh call-ups to the Big V youth line-up ahead of a state tri-series next month.
Parsons, a state pairs champion only three months ago alongside Moama’s Gracie Retallick, joins the eight-strong Victorian girls’ squad that challenges NSW and Queensland from Friday, August 2 to Sunday, August 4 at Club Tweed.
Meanwhile, Boswood receives the same honour in the boys’ side that features a couple of familiar faces from the western and eastern reaches of the Murray region, with Moama’s Jacob Brighton and Yarrawonga-based state singles champion Koby Cromie also receiving berths.
Boswood’s father Darren was supportive of his achievements, but consolatory for brother Henry, who missed the cut.
“It’s certainly a big thing for Charlie,” Darren said.
“It’s a pretty big honour to trial and there are lots of kids who didn’t get the opportunity.
“Charlie was happy as nothing’s ever guaranteed, so he had to do his bit. He had some good results leading in, but he was surprised and definitely stoked.
“It’s a bit disappointing for Henry after they both trialled at Sunbury; I thought both had trialled pretty well and, while I knew Charlie had been good, I thought Henry had done enough to get himself in.
“Life goes on, though, and he’ll have next year to have another crack at it.”
Darren said Charlie’s good fortunes didn’t end there, having also been selected as one of 16 boys from across the country to make an early trip to Tweed Heads for a lead-in tournament.
Joined by Cromie as well as one-time Kyabram ally Josh Cartwright, Boswood is in the field to contest the 2024 Junior Golden Nugget event on July 27 and 28.
That said, it’s also confirmed that neither Boswood nor Parsons will represent the Bombers this upcoming pennant season amidst a raft of departures, with the former headed to the big smoke at Port Melbourne, while the latter has crossed north of the border to Moama.
The Goulburn Valley connections continue with both representative squads set to descend on Shepparton on Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21, for an official practice session a fortnight before the titles.
Meanwhile in the upper divisions, there was joy in the Open squad announcement as well.
Another pair of familiar names will take on the eastern seaboard’s best in women’s and men’s competition, with one more former Bomber in Olivia Cartwright, now at Moama, in the women’s squad of 16.
As for the men, while no current local representatives are in the mix at present, departing Shepparton Golf dynamo Brad Orr has received the nod, while Tallygaroopna star Mitch Sidebottom has reached the Victorian development side.
