O'Donoghue last coached at Tallygaroopna in the Kyabram District League — taking the Redlegs to back-to-back grand finals and securing a senior premiership during his tenure — and is excited to be taking the reins at The Road.
“I love coaching, so when they put the advertisement out for the job I thought I would apply and I got the gig,” O'Donoghue said.
Ben Pedretti and Ben Bingham will serve as playing assistant coaches for O'Donoghue when the Murray Football League season returns next year.
“They are experienced campaigners and are looking to go down the coaching path, so I'm happy to help them out and work alongside them,” O'Donoghue said.
“Hopefully I can pass on anything I've learned over the journey.”
Tate Mifka has returned to his junior club after a stint with White Hills, while the headline re-signings for The Road include Daniel Schaper and Jimmy Boyer.
“The squad was kicking along nicely, but, unfortunately, like a fair few clubs, the cancelled season came at a time where we thought we could really challenge,” O'Donoghue said.
“Each list is different and as a coach you're only as good as the list you've got.
“Most of the list is sticking around, which is really exciting, and a couple of key additions will really help finish the squad off.”
The Road thanked outgoing coach Peter Sheehan for his efforts across two coronavirus-affected campaigns.
“Congupna Football Netball Club would like to thank Peter Sheehan for the last two years of leading the senior football side,” it said.
“Interruptions to those two football seasons made the job very difficult, but Peter demonstrated poise and commitment throughout.
“The club would like to thank you for your services and wish you the best for what is to come.”
