The Tigers defended their first-innings total of 5-224 with relative ease after Barooga put up a gallant fight.
Some brilliance from teenager Jack Beasley (2-15) and left-armer Mark Haberfield (2-29) snuffed out any attempt from the Hawks to claim victory at Barooga Recreation Reserve.
The stellar work with ball in hand saw the Tigers walk away with a convincing 99-run victory in the A-grade encounter.
Cobram’s coach Adam Harwood said the scoreboard did not truly reflect how close the contest played out.
“It was a really hard-fought match. I don’t think the scoreboard really reflects how tight and close the game really was,” he said.
“We struggled with the bat early on and were 3-12 and then Barooga got to 0-50 in reply and were in a strong position.”
Harwood praised the performances of Izac Artavilla and skipper Adam De Cicco.
The duo combined for a classy 136-run partnership when the Tigers were sent in to bat after losing the toss.
Artavilla backed up his century from the previous week with a blistering 68-run knock, while De Cicco starred with 76.
Some late fireworks from all-rounder Tyron Baden (33 runs) lifted the away side to 5-224 off 45 overs.
Justin Maley (2-14) and Will Sharp (2-56) stood out with the new ball for the Hawks.
In the run-chase, Barooga openers Daniel Ellis (32 runs) and Jamie Stanyer (21) laid down the perfect platform for their side.
The duo registered 53 on the scoreboard before Haberfield split the gap between bat and pads and bowled Stanyer.
Beasley, a 17-year-old left-arm spinner, then worked his magic to see Ellis depart.
Before long, Barooga was left in disarray at 4-57 and only managed to post another 68 runs to be dismissed for 125.
“Jack picked up two really big wickets for us and I thought he was a real standout,” Harwood said.
“He’s a young kid who has come up through the ranks and it’s great to see him perform well.
“And Izac followed up his great knock from last week. He has been the most consistent batter in the comp for a long time now and he’s got that belief in himself now.
“I thought Adam’s innings was phenomenal and he showed real leadership.”
Elsewhere, Katamatite secured its second win of the campaign with a four-wicket salute on the road against Nathalia.
Katty’s Mathew Hodge had a day out with the ball and collected 5-24, while youngster Kepler Lukies chipped in with 2-11.
Tasked with chasing Nathalia’s 133 for victory, Katamatite’s Brayden Beaton (38 runs) and opener Ben Lukies (35) led the way for the visitors.
In the remaining A-grade match, Tocumwal defeated Katunga by four wickets.
- In B-grade, Cobram got the chocolates over Barooga by eight wickets thanks to an Andrew Hogan masterclass.
Hogan claimed 3-14 and then recorded 38 runs with the bat in the win.
Teammate Jon Frankel collected 4-23 to help dismiss the Hawks for 110.
Katamatite skipper Andrew Erickson starred with 5-19 as he spearheaded his outfit to a seven-wicket win over Nathalia.
Strathmerton was unable to back up its memorable win last weekend and suffered a narrow nine-run loss to Jerilderie.
- In the junior ranks, Cobram was unable to get the job done against Nathalia in under-16s.
The Tigers suffered a six-wicket defeat.
Barooga went down by the slimmest of margins against Deniliquin.
The young Hawks finished on 7-87 from 20 overs in response to Deni’s 7-90.
Kane Rattray-Robert bowled superbly with 3-14, while James Hooper did his best with a classy 30 not out.
Lastly, Barooga’s under-14s enjoyed a narrow nine-wicket win over Nathalia in round two.
Sam Trembath top-scored with 20 not out.
