While the Murray Bushrangers boys fought valiantly against Geelong in the Talent League, the girls pulled through with four premiership points after defeating Greater Western Victoria (GWV) in their opening clash on Sunday.
Featuring Shepparton United players Leila Creevey and Lana Carroll, Murray ran away from the Rebels in the second half at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo, kicking 6.8 to 3.2 across the third and fourth quarter to salute in its opening stand.
A sturdy first term effort denied GWV a goal in the quarter as the Bushrangers nabbed two, before the contest tightened up, the Rebels closing the margin to eight points at half-time.
That lead would double by the siren of three-quarter-time, before Murray kicked away from a Rebels side finding scoring avenues difficult, kicking three goals to one in the last term to sew up a 32-point victory, 9.12 (66) to 5.4 (34).
The Demons duo aided in Murray’s restrictive effort of GWV’s attack, as Creevey had 12 touches across the backline, while Carroll laid six tackles in a determined display defensively.
In the boy’s Talent League, Geelong defeated the Bushies by 42 points, growing the lead consistently across four quarters.
Shepparton Bears prospects Jack Mellington and Angus Williams impressed, the latter earning a mention in Murray’s best, as he held the fort in his switch to a key defender, taking five marks and making three tackles along with 10 disposals.
Mellington had 22 possessions and five marks, racking up 78 fantasy points for the match.
Shepparton’s Hunter Howells and Seymour’s Rory Kennedy each contributed a goal in the 12.17 (89) to 6.11 (47) loss also.
