Not only did Moama get over the top of a formidable Mulwala in round 12 of Murray Football League, it also cemented itself as the clear-cut second-best team in the competition.
However, it didn’t start as promising for Moama as Mulwala unleashed the might of its attack in the first quarter, nailing five goals.
Meanwhile, Moama had to settle for one major by the first break as the Lions took a 25-point lead.
Despite Mulwala extending its lead throughout the second period, the Magpies began to find their feet, nailing a trio of maximums to bring the deficit back to 11 at the major break.
The Lions continued to show why they are a threat for the flag in 2025, slotting another three majors and conceding 1.2 in the third term.
While Moama remained within striking distance at the final turn, with Mulwala playing this well, victory looked to be a tall task.
Yet, greatness finds a way.
While the Magpies didn’t necessarily kick straight, 3.5 was more than enough for the hosts to snatch victory thanks to a stellar effort by their defensive unit, limiting the Lions to one behind in the clutch.
When the final siren sounded, it was the Magpies who flew highest, bringing down their chief finals rival by a singular stroke 8.11 (59) to 9.4 (58).
Jack Harland was awarded best-on-ground for Moama alongside Joshua Kennedy for their work out of half-back, while captain Mitchell Lake and Blake Evans got nods for their pair of goals each.
The victory leaves Moama with a 10-2 record and in a tier of its own behind unbeaten Congupna with six rounds left in the home and away season.
The Magpies have a good opportunity to continue their win streak when they hit the road and face Rumbalara in round 13 after the general bye this weekend.
