Mansfield’s Adam Storer and Shepparton Swans’ Rory Duffy followed in the footsteps of fathers Matt Storer and Ross Duffy when they took to the field at Elsternwick Park, donning the purple guernsey and gold monogram.
Swans Ethan and Oliver Warburton, as well as Seymour’s Dylan Cook, also had family lineage represent the GVL senior interleague team, and the pride for the guernsey was on display in each respective player’s performances.
When reflecting on the father-son connection at interleague level, Storer acknowledged the sentiment attached to his performance.
“It is pretty cool,” Storer said.
“It’s nice to keep that tradition going.”
Storer skippered the under-19s in their gallant effort against a quality VAFA program, and was thankful for the opportunity to represent the league for a second time after doing so last year against Ovens and Murray.
“It’s pretty special, there’s a good bunch of boys that were here together last year,” he said.
“It was a good challenge that we had to take on today and they just got the better of us but it was a great opportunity.”
The VAFA will play the Goulburn Valley League in the country next year, with Storer hoping the squad takes lessons from its 40-point defeat.
“We had good intent, good effort, but they just played the conditions better,” he said.
“They were just running us over, get a quick one-two and then beat us on the fly, so that’s something to work on for next year.”
