The rising star is quickly making a name for himself on the country’s premier motocross scene, having raced his KTM SXF 250 with distinction in round six of the championship down at the notoriously testing Loy Yang Park track.
Descending on Gippsland’s Traralgon Motorcycle Club on Sunday, July 12, Fletcher produced a solid showing across his three races in the MX2 Championship.
Widely regarded as the foremost professional stepping-stone class where emerging riders enter the pro ranks before advancing to the elite MX1 category, this performance on the day was a demonstration of Thompson’s potential as a star of the future.
In Race 1, he crossed the finish line in 20th place on his trusted No. 355 KTM SXF 250, as title chaser Alex Larwood won took the chequered flag.
The Goulburn Valley talent then improved to 19th place in Race 2, as Larwood again took the spoils, which left Thompson in 20th in the overall standings for round six.
It appears that Larwood is very much the man to beat in the MX2 Senior 250 stakes, after he won his eight and ninth races of the season so far to extend his championship lead, as he closes in on the title ahead of the round at Conondale on July 26.
Fletcher Thompson is the latest star to emerge from the GVJMC in recent times.
Meanwhile, the valiant outing from Thompson earned him plaudits back in the Goulburn Valley, with his efforts down in Traralgon having not gone unnoticed back on home soil in northern Victoria.
“Fletcher has been a member of the club since his junior days,” GVJMC club president Gooiker said.
“He’s slowly progressed down the years to become what he is today. We support all of our riders throughout their whole careers by doing regular coaching and riding days at the club.”
The 45-year-old put the budding prodigy’s achievement into context as he outlined the magnitude of the starlet’s progression down the years.
“The ProMX is the pinnacle of senior racing in Australia and travels around the country, has multiple rounds and the MX2 is the senior 250 class,” Gooiker said.
“It’s exciting to watch all the riders progress - particularly Fletcher down the years!”
This is the latest success story at the club, which is currently experiencing a golden era following the recent triumph of Queen of the Desert, Madison Healey, and Zandar Gooiker at the famous Tatts Finke Desert Race back in June.
Building upon these triumphs, the Shepparton Motocross Track on Echuca Rd, Mooroopna will play host to a number of illustrious events in the not too distant future.
First up, the venue will welcome upcoming riders from across Victoria for the Junior State Championships before the 2026 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championship (AJMX) in September, which has received the backing of the Greater Shepparton City Council.
“The council is behind us on that one (the AJMX) and we’ll pack the town full of motocross riders because there’ll be about 500 riders from all over Australia,” Gooiker added.
