The round 13 League One Men’s showdown between Shepparton South and Tatura lived up to expectations, with the two sides battling out a 1-1 draw.
South drew first blood at Tatura’s Howley Oval, with new signing Craig Carley scoring a superb 19th minute strike.
This goal would be the only one for the half, however a second-half Fraser Gosstray goal to Tatura saw the scores draw level and that was how it remained.
South coach Rob Harmeston said it was a pretty even game.
“Both teams had a couple of chances, we also had a man sent off in the second half which obviously changed things for us,” Harmeston said.
“It made it a little bit more difficult to do what we wanted to do.
“We still had chances, we could have won it a couple of times, we actually put it in the back of the net but it was judged to be offside.
“At the end of the day we’ll take a draw.”
South captain Nathan Radevski picked up a red card for a wayward challenge in the second half, while Harmeston acknowledged the impressive performances of Greg Nash and Brent Barassi.
The result sees South remain three points ahead of the Ibises on the ladder and with a superior goal difference the title is now very much theirs to lose.
In the other League One Men’s clash, Shepparton United defeated Epsom 3-1 at McEwen Reserve.
United went down a goal early, however finishes to Joe Worrall (17th minute), Qader Karimi (25th minute) and Daniel Pendovski (59th minute) saw the Shepparton side secure a 3-1 win.
Meanwhile League Two Men’s team the Shepparton Jaguars downed the Deniliquin Wanderers 1-0.
In the League One Women’s competition Shepparton United secured an important 4-0 victory against fellow top four hopeful Spring Gully United.
United coach Lucy Ciancio said it was a good win for the Shepparton side.
“Both teams came out strong and wanting the win, but we came out on top with the four goals,” Ciancio said.
“Everybody played exceptionally well, the passing and communicating was phenomenal.”
United’s Tara Ambrosini had a fantastic game in blue, scoring four goals, with the “on fire” attacker fighting hard throughout the contest.
“Hard work at training has showed how well we did this weekend and am hoping it can continue for the rest of the remaining season,” Ciancio said.
“It is pretty exciting, we’re hoping to get another win this weekend so we can secure third spot."
The result sees United sit in third spot, just three points off the ladder-leading Strathfieldsaye Colts United.
Tatura’s League Two women’s team had a bye.
