The Cutters senior footballers put in their best performance of the year against Strathmerton last week.
Cutters senior coach Adam Bourke said his team got off to a great start again on the weekend, but a lapse of momentum in the match affected his side.
“We kicked the first goal of the match and also the first goal of the second quarter,” he said.
“Around the eight to 10 minute mark of the first quarter we’d had the majority of the play, and then the umpire did his hamstring, which delayed the game for five to 10 minutes. It hurt us when we were looking quite strong.
“They then kicked five goals in the quarter, but until then, we were looking pretty competitive.
“We couldn’t transition the footy effectively. We conceded around 63 scoring shots against Tungamah, and we cut that to nearly half on the weekend.
“We also had opportunities to kick more than four goals and three behinds, we just didn’t get into good enough range to take them.”
With teams clearly looking to score big against the Cutters, Bourke said the side has to prevent high scores against them by getting the ball themselves.
“The best defence is a good offence.
“With the ball, if we’re hitting the scoreboard, we limit how much they can hit the scoreboard.
“We’ve just got to try and get first use of the ball, as we haven’t been getting enough of it.
“This year we’ve been going with a young ruckman who is pretty talented, but hasn’t been to the level.
“He will go back and play reserves this weekend.”
This week the Cutters will travel to play the 12th-placed Katunga Swans, who are coming off an eight point loss to Rennie - Swans 9.14 (68) def by Rennie 11.10 (76).
It was Rennie’s first win of the year, and Bourke said it will have fired up Katunga.
“Rennie played really well on the weekend. Katunga were probably suffering a bit, and Rennie caught them on the hop.”
“We’ve got to try and catch them as well.
“A win would be amazing; just for team morale and everything around the club, it would be great.”
“A lot of people from the club were pretty upbeat with how we played on the weekend.
“I still have to remind people we lost by 20 goals and not to be too happy with that, but we’re focused on making improvements this week.”
