Having played with Old Students (five campaigns) and Tongala (three) since leaving Tatura at the end of the 2012-13 season, Coombs has kept a keen eye on the happenings at Howley Oval - including playing with the Ibises in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League.
“I came to Australia about 10 years ago to play for Tatura,” Coombs said.
“The club was a big part of me coming across, I met my wife over here and have a young family now.
“I live close to the ground, too, so that was part of my decision to go back to the club.”
Coombs was named Goulburn Murray Cricket's A-grade men's Cricketer of the Year with 661 runs at 50.85 and 10 wickets at 28.8 in the 2019-20 season, and has averaged more than 12 wickets and 292 runs per summer across all formats since he last played for Tatura.
“We made two semi finals in my time at Tongala and it was probably a bit disappointing to not be able to make a grand final,” Coombs said.
“I try to lead from the front as coach or captain and I'll try to do that again at Tatura.”
Coombs will not only bring plenty of experience to Tatura's Haisman Shield outfit, but will look to pass some of it on to the young group now under his tutelage.
“I really want to help the club develop, there's lots of young kids and I want to be part of their improvement,” Coombs said.
“They've had good exposure at senior level and we'll be looking for that consistency of performance now, trying to get that gap between the best performance and the worst performance a lot closer and trying to be in every game.”
● In other cricket news, Corey Hickford and Ben Clurey will be co-captains of Katandra this summer, with Jedd Wright stepping down from his leadership role.
Windows around Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve are also on high alert, with big-hitting all-rounder Stuart Turner set to line up for Northerners this Cricket Shepparton season.
Turner has swapped his red Karramomus shirt for a green Jets outfit after moving north since last summer.
Turner thrilled crowds in the Goulburn Valley Bush Bash League last season as well - and the third iteration of the marquee competition is set to be launched shortly.
Draft night is set for Friday, October 29, and each of the four outfits will once again retain five players from their previous squad of stars.
This time around franchises will also be able to nominate one local recruit - registered to CS, GMC or Murray Valley Cricket Association - apiece to join their ranks before draft night.
