Now Echuca’s Jacob Brighton has confirmed his place in the history books as its youngest A-grade club champion.
Brighton, 12, consolidated his standing as one to watch on the bowls scene after taking out East Shepparton’s club championship Saturday, February 5.
After claiming victory over John Gribble in the semi-final, 25-18, Brighton overcame clubman Gino Cervi, 25-17, in the final.
In a titanic battle, Brighton blitzed away to an early lead before the experience of Cervi came to the fore, drawing back within three shots.
With clinical precision, Brighton raced away to secure the necessary 25 shots.
East Shepparton president Dennis Galt confirmed Brighton’s status in the history books, and praised the young talent for his triumph.
“Jacob bowled very well,” Galt said.
“He’s controlled as well. He gave a couple of ends away to Gino, but he didn’t lose it.
“We thought the pressure would be on, but he didn’t seem to worry.”
Galt also noted the dichotomy of Brighton, the youngest member of the club, defeating one of the oldest in Cervi, 88, who Galt also credited for an outstanding tournament.
“(Jacob) beat one of the eldest,” Galt said.
“(Gino’s) been a staunch member of the club in terms of time and work put in for years.”
Remarkably, Brighton’s run in the club championships isn’t over yet, with the up-and-coming bowls prodigy still set to contest the Eagles’ B-grade semi-final.
