The journey began on December 14, 2024, when Kadey Macklin represented Benalla at the Victorian Long Course Swimming Championships in the 15 years age group.
She qualified for five events and achieved several top-20 finishes, with her standout performance being an 18th place in the 400m freestyle. Competing at this elite level, Kadey demonstrated determination and skill, setting the tone for a strong season ahead.
On January 11, 2025, Tilly De Fazio and Sophie McKenzie competed at the Matioli Victorian Sprint Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Both girls swam in the 11-and-under age group, having earned their places with state-level qualifying times.
Tilly delivered an impressive 18th place finish in the 50m backstroke and placed 23rd in the 50m freestyle. Sophie also performed strongly, finishing 20th in the breaststroke and competing admirably in the freestyle. These results reflect their hard work and commitment to improving their skills at the state level.
The highlight of the season came at the Victorian Country Long Course Swimming Championships, held in Mildura from January 18 to 20.
This prestigious competition, reserved for country clubs and swimmers who meet qualifying times, saw the Benalla team compete with distinction. Kadey continued to show perseverance, swimming a fantastic race and achieving a personal best in the 100m freestyle final.
Tilly came heartbreakingly close to medalling, finishing fourth in the backstroke final with a huge personal best, and she secured sixth place in the highly competitive freestyle final.
Sophie impressed with an outstanding sixth place in the breaststroke final, capping off a brilliant performance at her first ‘countries’. Both Tilly and Sophie embraced the opportunity to compete at this elite level and formed closer bonds with their teammates and other swimmers on the circuit.
Throughout the competition, the Benalla team’s enthusiasm was on full display, with chanting and dancing that lifted spirits and reflected their camaraderie.
