The decision was made to pull the plug on the remainder of the campaign on September 7 at a league meeting with all 15 member clubs.
The league is the last domino in the AFL Goulburn Murray region to fall, going down the same path as the Goulburn Valley, Murray and Picola and District leagues.
There was hope that play could resume in the coming weeks, with the league revealing its plan to start the finals series.
But the lockdown extension by the Victorian Government on Thursday, September 2, crushed any chances of completing the season.
No premiership will be awarded in any football or netball grades, however teams that finished on top will be recognised as minor premiers.
Lancaster claimed top spot in the senior football with an unblemished record, while Tallygaroopna ended the year atop the A-grade netball ladder.
League president Fraser Kerrins said it was a difficult call to make, but highlighted the importance of safeguarding all participants.
“This was a tough decision to make and one that we did not take lightly," Kerrins said.
"In consultation with our 15 member clubs, a decision was reached to ultimately conclude the 2021 season.
"The concern for our players, officials and volunteers for their health and safety became too great of a concern with each passing day. I would like to personally commend all 15 teams for their work throughout this season and we hope to be in a position for 2022 where we are able to host a finals series."
The league now turns its attention to its upcoming presentation night.
The 2021 McNamara Medal and Warren Medal will be awarded on October 1.
Like the Goulburn Valley League, this event will be livestreamed.
