By bringing in defenders Ellis Williamson and Sean Pye, Suns coach Craig Carley is addressing a stark issue which has hampered his side’s progress for some time now.
Williamson, a ball playing centre-half hailing from England, was set to ply his trade with Wangaratta City in 2020.
He comes to the Suns packing a sound resume, having developed through professional youth set-ups at Nottingham Forest and Mansfield Town.
“Ellis has been training with the club for a significant amount of time now and I’m delighted he has put pen to paper for the 2021 season,” Carley said.
“Ellis is a quality defender and has a fantastic range of passing and will be a huge asset to our club moving forward.
“It’s no secret that defensively we need to improve and I feel Ellis will play a big part of that.”
The Suns shipped 52 goals in 2019 and have since lost defensive bastions in Jacob Lever and Jordan Barrow.
Williamson, while still a recruit, is expected to fill a hole left by the outgoing Lever.
Pye on the other hand, is familiar face and former foe to Carley.
Previously wearing the armband at the Suns’ country rival Murray United, the 33-year-old proved his worth at the border club before its senior side became defunct.
Carley was elated to lock in the seasoned centre back as the National Premier League Two season edges nearer.
“Sean is a very composed central defender who brings a lot of experience and leadership to the group. He is very calm on the ball and reads the game very well,” Carley said.
“Sean has been captain at Murray United for a number of years and that experience will be invaluable as he knows this competition inside out.
“I am delighted to have both boys on board.”
