Last week, Basketball Victoria announced Waight as head coach of Victoria Country's under-16 boys’ side.
The Shepparton Gators Big V coach has been rewarded the top job for his previous efforts with the state's Country outfit.
Waight was pencilled in to be assistant coach at this year's championships, before they were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It is still to be confirmed when or where next year's championships will be held.
The new state coach said he was shocked when he found out the news and that it was a privilege to be named head coach of Victoria Country.
“Yeah, I'm rapt. I'm really looking forward to next year,” Waight said.
“I found out about a week before the announcement and it was a bit of a shock. I didn't expect it all.
“I'm really honoured and it's a massive privilege to be named coach of a state side.
“I can't wait to represent Shepparton and Victoria at the championships next year.”
Waight's recent achievement follows years of involvement in Victoria Country's Junior Basketball Championships.
The experienced mentor has worked his way up from team manager and development coach to being named assistant coach.
Waight said his previous experience would bode well for his first attempt at steering the ship.
“Having that prior experience will definitely help me,” he said.
“I have a bit of an idea of what to expect and what is expected.”
And joining Waight at next year's tournament will be assistant coaches Lucas Allen and Hayden Annett.
Waight said he looked forward to working alongside the duo — especially Allen.
“And I have two great assistant coaches beside me in Lucas Allen and Hayden Annett,” he said.
“Lucas has been the head coach before and I'm really looking forward to being able to pick his brains and learn off him.”
Waight joined an extensive list of coaches to be named as state leaders last week.
Basketball Victoria operations general manager Grant Wallace said he was impressed with the quality of the coaching candidates in Victoria's junior basketball program.
“We were thoroughly impressed with the calibre of coaches who nominated for our 2021 state team program and appreciate those who applied for positions,” Wallace said.
“The group of coaches and staff we have selected will guide Victoria’s best junior players into the 2021 Australian Junior Championships and gain valuable coaching experience at these events."
