Grant Chappell and Jack Bassett were in the Division 1 team whilst Liam Williams and Lucy Bassett were members of the Division 2 team.
In Division 1 Numurkah played Nathalia. Jack Bassett’s singles game was match of the day with Jack winning a great battle in a tie breaker 8/7. He also won his doubles 8/3.
Grant Chappell had a clean sweep of doubles victories winning 8/3 and mixed doubles in a great match 8/7. Numurkah won the day 9 sets to 3 and won on games 75 to 55.
In Division 2 Numurkah took on Shepparton. Liam Williams had a great start with a singles tiebreaker win 6/5, he then lost his mixed match in a tiebreaker 8/7.
Lucy Bassett lost her first doubles match 8/2, then won her singles match 6/4 and finished with a close 8/7 win in her mixed match. Numurkah claimed 9 sets to Shepparton’s 2 and won on games 73 to 55.
It was a terrific effort to win both divisions. Numurkah Tennis has made Yarrawonga’s players very welcome, and it was terrific to see former Yarrawonga member and Goulburn Murray Association President Mark Mills also part of the Division 1 team.
Yarrawonga members are encouraged to consider playing Saturday afternoon tennis in 2022/23 and it would be fantastic to have a Yarrawonga team.
Tuesday Men’s Tennis
The Grand Finals of the Tuesday Mens competition were held last week. In fantastic conditions all in attendance battled hard for premiership glory.
In A Grade Wawrinka took on Lendl. Lendl jumped to an early lead winning the first 2 sets of the night with the combinations of Wei Wong/ Ben Cope and Jim Zanin/ Jason Bassett playing well.
Ben Cope suffered a season ending injury at the end of the match and was unable to play the rest of the night. Super-sub Shane Forge took the court to have a win with partner Jason Bassett.
In the other set Tom McKimmie and Andrew Banks put Wawrinka on the board with a win. Leading into the last 2 sets Lendl had a strong 7 game lead.
At that stage the rubber changed completely with Tom McKimmie and Trent Head dominating with a 6/0 win and Andrew Brew and Andrew Banks winning 6/1. In a miraculous come from behind win Wawrinka won by 5 games. This was a great win considering they just snuck into the 4. Congratulations to Tom McKimmie, Andrew Brew, Andrew Banks and Trent Head all who will have their name etched on the shield for the first time.
In the B Grade final Korda played Wilander. This match was very close before Korda took a slight lead that they were able to maintain for the remainder of the night.
Well done to Korda’s Jack Bassett, Jason Partelle, Tim O’Dwyer and Troy Sneddon on the win.
In C Grade Federer took on Courier. With Nick Mullavey the youngest member of the team at 58, Federer had a combined age of 267. On the night this experience proved invaluable as they claimed victory. Well done to Pete Thomas, Nick Mullavey, John Arnold and Simon De Oleveria.
At the conclusion of the night everyone was in agreement how much fun the competition is and a great way to socialise. Competition organiser Ash Wheaton received immense praise by all in attendance for the magnificent job he does. He was unanimously elected to again run the competition in the 2022/23 season.
Saturday Morning Tennis
The Hot Shots and coaching groups had great sessions. The coaches continue to be very impressed with the skill development of the players. It is fantastic to see and bodes well for the future of the tennis club.
For the players competing in matches the players generally played mixed doubles. The final set each group saw a boys pair against a girls pair. It appears the girls might have slightly come out on top when the results were tallied.
The group winners were Summer Ibbott, Sonny Sneddon, Raffa Leary, Lily Thompson, Emily Linehan, Hayley Bennett, Ella Lewis, Olivia Lewis, Charlie Mouat and Emma Thompson.
This week will be the final Saturday of junior tennis. The Hot Shots and coaching programs will continue as usual. Kids playing matches will compete in parent/child doubles. This is always a great way to end the season.
Junior Club Championships
On Saturday, February 26 the Junior Club Championships commenced. Each player was entered in 2 age groups to give everyone the most tennis they could play.
The matches were outstanding, and the standard was very high. Not all matches were finished on the day and semi finals and finals have been played over the past few weeks. Congratulations to all winners and finalists.
Senior Club Championships
On Sunday the Senior Club Championships commenced in beautiful conditions on the best courts in Australia. Everyone in attendance played very well and there were many very close matches.
Some events are still incomplete and will be finished this weekend. A full list of results will appear in next week’s paper.
