Duffy was demoted to the Broncos bench ahead of their clash against Canberra on Friday after he played in the No.7 jersey in the club's dismal 40-6 thumping by the Warriors last Saturday.
Maguire opted to thrust veteran playmaker Ben Hunt into the position for the first time since round 18 instead, and the decision came after he slotted the game-winning field goal against the Raiders in last year's NRL finals series.
The coach is also hoping Hunt can provide the spark to help the reigning premiers (6-15) avoid a dreaded wooden spoon.
"Through the time that we're going through at the moment, I just feel that the experience is going to add to just controlling what we're doing," Maguire said.
"I've been pretty pleased with how Tommy's going. I really enjoy coaching Tommy. He's got plenty of footy in front of him.
"But I just felt at this moment that having Hunty there being through pretty well everything he can do in rugby league, he can just get on the field and just play his part for the team."
The coach also named Hayze Perham to replace fullback Reece Walsh, who sustained a syndesmosis injury last round.
"I remember him two or three years ago when he really started to hit his straps," the coach said.
"He's a real talent, and he just needs to be able to stay on the field now and keep playing and performing. I think he's probably got the best years ahead of him."
Maguire dodged questions surrounding whether star prop Payne Haas will need to undergo hand surgery, which would rule him out of the Rugby League World Cup, saying he seemed "pretty good" on Thursday.
The coach is more focused on Friday's clash and overcoming an emotionally charged Raiders outfit who are farewelling veteran prop Josh Papali'i.
Canberra have renamed GIO Stadium 'Papa's House' for his final home game as they look to send off their most-capped player in style and keep their slim finals hopes alive.
"You look at all the legends of so many clubs that have made such an impact. You just can't go and get another player and say, OK, you're going to replace him," coach Ricky Stuart said.
"Glen Lazarus was here to be involved in our team meeting ... It was nice to have Lazo here because we put Josh up in Lazo's class of players."
