Elderly man immobilised after early morning burglary

A thief left their victims with no way to call for help.

An elderly man has been left laying immobilised for hours in the dark in his front yard after following an intruder from his home.

Police said an unknown person entered an Alexander Parade address in Shepparton’s south at around 3am on Saturday, August 15.

The intruder turned on a light, which woke one of the residents, before stealing a mobile phone from the premises and fleeing.

Police said an elderly couple who lived in the home were both at home during the burglary.

A man followed the intruder out the front door, but fell into his garden.

Due to his and his wife’s mobility issues, he was unable to get up or be helped up, according to police.

The couple were unable to call for help because their phone had been stolen, so the man was kept warm with blankets until a significant time later in the morning when a stranger passed the property and called 000.

The man remained in hospital on Tuesday morning, August 18.
