I’m Rosa Ritchie And I’m Lachlan Durling. Here’s what’s making news, today, May 3. The time is right to redevelop the multi-storey car park in the Shepparton CBD, but City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said no decision had been made as to council’s involvement in its future.Over the years there have been several campaigns from ratepayers to buy back the multi-deck car park in Stewart St which was originally built by the former Shepparton council in 1973 with 355 spaces.
It was controversially sold by commissioners who took charge of the municipality prior to amalgamation in 1997.Current owner Care Park is selling the site with a seven-year lease back to run the facility as a car park, but the lease could be cut short and the land developed.Whether council will try to buy back the farm is still to be determined, but Cr O’Keeffe said the sale would hopefully address community concerns about the site which has become rundown and underutilised.
FOUR drivers will face court, 14 people were fined and 13 vehicles were issued defect notices as part of a weekend anti-hooning operation in Echuca.Campaspe Highway Patrol carried out Operation Cruise with Bendigo Highway Patrol and uniformed Echuca police members on Friday and Saturday nights in response to intentional high-risk driving. The operation came after a night of hooning in Echuca on Thursday night which kept residents up for hours. Campaspe Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Corey Holland said while he wasn’t happy to see this type of behaviour on the roads, it was a relief to get some cars and drivers off the road. Police arrested four people for drink and drug driving, driving while suspended and driving an unroadworthy/unsafe vehicle. Two men were also charged with driving a car making undue or excessive noise.
Shepparton over-50s poured into Goulburn Valley Health vaccination hubs on Monday to receive their first AstraZeneca COVID-19 jab.The McIntosh Centre at Shepparton Showgrounds was a hive of activity as the vaccine became available to all Australians aged 50 and over for the first time on Monday.Shepparton's David Mansfield was just one local to roll up his sleeve. "It went alright, although I hate needles," he admitted with a laugh. Vaccination clinics are now open to all people from this cohort, with GP bookings also set to come online from May 17. While AstraZeneca is no longer recommended for under-50s after it was linked to very rare blood clots, health authorities say the benefits outweigh the risks for those aged over 50.
AN ECHUCA teen is devastated after his dream bike was stolen from school last week. Thirteen-year-old Nash Bryant's Giant Talon bicycle was stolen from Echuca College's bike shed on Wednesday, April 28. His mum, Sarah, said the bike was chained up with a lock, and the front wheel was removed and left and the bike frame stolen. She said he had saved up for 12 months to purchase the dream bike and he was “shattered”, and now had to walk home from school.
And in sport, Kyabram P-12 College students conquered the competition in not one, not two, but three statewide events last week. In fact, the Kyabram players in the School Sport Victoria state bowls finals in Sunbury on April 28 left no titles for anyone else as they secured a clean sweep of the three championships up for grabs. And although there were familiar Goulburn Valley Bowls Division faces among the strong Kyabram P-12 contingent, the number of non pennant-playing students far outweighed those who pick up a bowl regularly. But after tasting success at the highest school bowls level, that might change as the bowls bug takes hold in the classroom. That's the news, you're up to date.
