Patterson didn't get to bat for the Scorchers last season after being stuck behind Liam Livingstone, Chris Jordan, Colin Munro, Josh Inglis, Ashton Turner, and Mitch Marsh in the pecking order.
But the 28-year-old proved his worth on Wednesday night by striking his maiden BBL half-century.
Patterson's 55 of 30 balls played a key part in the Scorchers' six-run victory over the Brisbane Heat at Optus Stadium, and he'll be aiming to continue that strong form in Saturday night's clash with the Adelaide Strikers in Sydney.
The former Test batsman has played just five times for the Scorchers since crossing from the Sydney Thunder three seasons ago, but he's now learnt to take the disappointment in his stride.
"I probably had that thinking about it in the past, and I probably got a little bit resentful when I haven't got my way essentially," Patterson said.
"I just really tried to treat (the game against Brisbane) almost like a free swing.
"There were no hard feelings about not getting opportunities to play last year.
"I didn't try to go out there with a point to prove as such, I just tried to go out there and treat it like an opportunity and just tried to showcase my skills.
"My thinking is to leave the selection side of things to the powers that be."
Patterson is more renowned for his exploits in the long form of cricket.
His Test average of 144 - built after two Tests against Sri Lanka in 2019 - is a testament to that.
But Patterson is keen to build a reputation for being a good Twenty20 player as well.
"It's probably the one format that I've put in the most work over the last two years," Patterson said.
"I didn't get an opportunity last year, but it was good to be around the group and see how a lot of other guys go about it.
"It was nice to get some runs early in the competition, just to bank some runs for your own confidence."
