The YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament program, slated for 2025, will welcome 120 young Victorians aged 16 to 25, offering an unparalleled dive into the legislative process.
Come July next year, participants will find themselves in the chambers of parliament, where, over three intensive days, they will draft, debate and vote on bills that matter to them.
This isn’t just a theoretical exercise.
The bills that manage to pass muster at the Youth Parliament will be presented to the government for consideration, marking a significant opportunity for young people to influence actual legislative changes.
Historically, this platform has been instrumental in creating over 30 Victorian laws, including a new recycling scheme and the introduction of neutral school uniforms.
State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes encouraged residents in her district to seize such an influential and unique initiative.
“Our support for the Youth Parliament is one of the ways we’re backing young people in Victoria to lead, grow and reach their full potential,” she said.
“I encourage young people across Northern Victoria to apply, get involved and use their voices to influence change.”
Further enriching the experience, the program also features the YMCA Victoria Youth Press Gallery.
This segment is tailored for those with a flair for journalism, offering budding reporters, photographers and videographers a chance to hone their skills while covering the event.
Since its inception in 1987, the YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament has been pivotal in empowering youth, ensuring their perspectives and ideas are heard and valued.
Applications are now open until October 13.
