The walk will take place on Thursday, April 6, and all proceeds from the event will go towards funding ongoing research for cord blood- an important resource for stem cells used to treat a range of conditions, including blood disorders, immune system disorders, and some types of cancer.
This event has become an important initiative for Inner Wheel Australia after a young Australian boy's life was saved by receiving a stem cell transplant. Clubs all over Australia have raised more than $3 million over the years to aid researchers in their quest for new treatments and cures.
Corowa's Inner Wheel Cord Blood Coordinator Margaret Playford said she was looking forward to the club supporting this important cause.
"Cord blood is so important, and the research being done in this field has the potential to save countless lives. We are proud to support this cause and make a difference."
The walk will take place around the Corowa Cricket Oval, with participants paying just $10 to take part.
Cord blood is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is born and is rich in stem cells. These stem cells are unique because they can develop into any type of blood cell, making them valuable in treating a range of conditions.
Cord blood stem cells have been used successfully to treat a variety of blood and immune system disorders, including leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell anemia. They have also shown promise in the treatment of some types of cancer and neurological disorders.
One of the major advantages of cord blood stem cells is that they can be collected easily and safely after a baby is born, without any harm to the mother or the newborn. Unlike bone marrow transplants, which require a perfect match between donor and recipient, cord blood stem cells are more flexible and can be used for patients who do not have a matched donor available.
The Inner Wheel Club of Corowa and District is for women who enjoy working together to help at a local, national and community level.
The women meet once a month for friendship and fun. To find out more contact iiw.au.corowadistrict@gmail.com
