Victoria to resume international flights from April 8, with weekly cap of 800 passengers

International flights to Victoria will resume on April 8, with 800 passengers to be permitted each week.

This comes in the wake of a recent review into the state's hotel quarantine system, which reported ventilation was to blame for the spread of the virus that sparked Victoria's third lockdown in mid-February.

The Department of Health is planning to revamp the hotel quarantine system to prevent coronavirus leaks down the track, with the passenger cap to increase to 1120 return passengers per week as ventilation is improved in more hotels.

Acting Premier James Merlino said he had written to the Prime Minister, advocating for a "nationally consistent approach" to ventilation.

"Victoria's the only jurisdiction that has done this additional work in terms of ventilation so we want to share that and have a nationally consistent approach to ventilation across our country," he said.

"The 20 matters that relate to the home quarantine, fresh air breaks, these are national cabinet decisions and we have referred to those to the Commonwealth and through the Commonwealth to national cabinet."

Victoria has recorded no new COVID-19 cases today for the 27th day in a row.
