Announced on Tuesday, the Transport for NSW project is scheduled to complete the work tonight (weather permitting).
The work was to start at 5pm and be completed by 10pm, with one lane of traffic expected to be open at all times.
TfNSW said the decision to remove the crossing, which sits at the Davidson St entrance to the five-ways roundabout, was based on community feedback.
It stemmed from concerns raised through the Pastoral Times and to Edward River Council about ‘near miss’ incidents involving pedestrians and vehicles dating back to 2004.
“This follows strong community support, with 72 per cent of respondents to a recent Edward River Council survey saying they don’t feel safe using the crossing,” a TfNSW community notification stated.
“The crossing no longer meets safety standards and is in an unsafe location, with reports that drivers don’t stop for pedestrians.
“A safer alternative is available under the Brick Kiln Bridge, about 40m south of the current crossing.”
Council arranged the survey to support a funding application to improve the underpass crossing.
Options for these upgrades are still being investigated.
Coucnil CEO Jack Bond has previously said this would include improvements to the footpath, and may also include lighting.
