Unique pod permanently calls Lemon Tree home

The street-front dining space pod in front of Lemon Tree Café will stay at its home.

The fitted-out shipping container was placed in front of the Fryers St eatery in December last year, with the intention of being trialled for three months before moving to a new temporary home.

However, Greater Shepparton City Council said the pod received little interest from other businesses and it was now working with Lemon Tree Café owners to keep it at its site.

“After consulting with the operators within the hospitality industry there was no interest other than from Lemon Tree Café to have the container on a more permanent basis,” council's sustainable development director Geraldine Christou said.

“Council has not received information to suggest that the pod is a detriment to either café, traffic or other businesses.

“Lemon Tree Café have spoken positively in relation to their experience regarding the shipping container.

“The use of the container on a more permanent basis is a permissible option and can achieve compliance with council’s outdoor dining policy.”

Café owner Leanne Stride said the pod was popular with diners.

“It's something unique because it's a point of difference; it does feel like sitting on the road,” she said.

“People often ask if there's a free table in the pod that they'd like to sit there.

“It's good for the Goulburn Valley to have something different and with the weather getting nicer no doubt plenty more people will want to sit in it.”
