The company provides consulting services and products for aquaponics enthusiasts and commercial operators.
“We also provide information and consulting in particular for recirculating aquaculture,” Andrew said.
“We are probably for your advanced hobbyist right through to commercial operations.”
Wiseponics is developing products to reduce risks associated with aquaponics systems.
“We have a couple of different products we are designing at the moment to ease the burden, because there is a lot of risk,” Andrew said.
“It is about fixing the limitations and also maximising the efficiency of the system.
“We can help you build your whole aquaponics system or with just the control module.”
Andrew has extensive experience with a range of fish species.
“’I’ve personally grown out trout, rainbow trout, Murray cod and native catfish,” he said.
For beginners, he recommends starting with hardy species.
“Native catfish are quite tough, quite resilient and they play well with each other,” he said.
“Something like Murray cod, they are a nice fish to have in, but they are very aggressive, so they are quite happy to kill each other, making them a bit trickier to look after.”
Temperature management affects fish selection and growth rates.
“If they are going in a greenhouse where it is going to be a bit warmer, something like a native catfish will do very well,” he said.
Growth times vary significantly, with trout reaching harvest size within six months, while native catfish take six to 18 months.
The systems support diverse plant cultivation.
“You can grow pretty much any fruit and vegetables off the aquaponics system,” Andrew said.
“I've had tomatoes, rock melons and watermelons.”
“I’ve got a glasshouse full of tomatoes at the moment, just growing off the fish water.”
