Held at Housey Housey in Ballarat, the ceremony — the first in-person RPCV awards since 2019 — saw the News commended in the prestigious Media Outlet of the Year category.
News deputy editor Max Stainkamph won Best Feature Story — Print, while Dairy News Australia’s Jeanette Severs was highly commended in the same section.
Recognised: Max Stainkamph won Best Feature Story — Print at the Rural Press Club of Victoria awards.
Mr Stainkamph’s gong was awarded for his in-depth piece on the effects of COVID-19 on life in the Goulburn Valley, delving into what the region could expect moving forward when the last lockdown lifted in October last year.
His story assessed how the health system — and wider community — would cope during the ‘post-lockdown’ period while the virus still ran rampant.
Ms Severs was recognised for her story titled ‘Fire plan was life saving’, detailing how during the 2019-20 bushfires, Debbie and Richard Platts relied on their own and their staff’s experience with volunteer fire brigades, as well as draft fire preparedness plans available through Dairy Australia, to help them formulate a successful plan to save key assets on their farms in NSW’s Bega Valley.
Features co-ordinator Caitlyn Grant was named as a finalist in the Ray Frawley Young Journalist of the Year category for her work with the Let’s Talk series.
“I’m extremely proud of our work here at the News, as well as the wider McPherson Media Group team,” News editor Tyler Maher said.
“It was great to see the News itself, Max, Jeanette and Caitlyn all featured at the Rural Press Club awards, and it was wonderful to be at the event in person once again.
“We work hard to keep our communities informed and entertained, and we are all thankful for the recognition of a ceremony like this.”
