The full 80 minutes and some was needed to crown a winner between Tallygaroopna and Avenel, after the scores were locked at full-time.
As the pressure intensified and players from both sides gave it their all, it was Tallygaroopna that triumphed by six points in an extra-time thriller.
Spectators at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve were left stunned when a rogue kick from Avenel went through for a behind in the final five seconds of the match, tying up the scores at 54-apiece.
Seconds later, players slumped to the ground in disbelief as the siren sounded to finish the game in a draw.
Two five-minute halves stood in the way of success for the tired and adrenaline-soaked players.
And it was Tallygaroopna that willed its way to victory, with the sole goal kicked in extra-time enough for the Redlegs to hold on in a tense 10 minutes of football.
Redlegs playing coach Trent Sidebottom was left trying to find words to explain his emotions after the match.
“I'm just lost for words, I can't describe it,” he said.
“I'm really glad the siren went when it did, we were just about out of legs.
“Those last five minutes were incredible.”
The match was evenly balanced across the four quarters, with a couple of goals the biggest margin either side had.
After the first half was played in wet conditions, the game soon opened up as the sunshine peeped through the clouds.
Tallygaroopna got its run and carry game firing after half-time and led by a game-high 20 points at three-quarter time.
But Avenel's Cameron Berry (four goals), Lachlan McKenzie and Todd Heaysman (one) helped to keep their side in the contest.
Nick Fichera booted four goals and was solid in attack for Tally, while Jye Scott (one) stood up in pivotal moments.
Sidebottom's brother Josh was influential in the ruck, with his handball to Scott — who finished with a goal — after laying a big bump in the last quarter highlighted his importance around the ground.
And Tally's Lachlan Karl was awarded the best-on-ground medal for his strong game through the midfield.
Sidebottom said Karl's game was "brilliant" especially after the playing coach spoke to the on-baller after giving away a couple of free kicks.
“The way he reacted, he played a ripping game through the midfield,” he said.
“But probably the whole midfield line stood up, their endeavour and run from the contest probably won us the game.”
The now two-time premiership player was quick to praise the efforts of not only the 21 players, but the entire squad.
“It was a squad of 28 that got us here,” he said.
“It was really hard (on Thursday night) picking the squad.
