Shepparton United 6 (Papalia 4’, 32’, Ca.Georgiou 41’, 75’, 77’, Ruijters 69’) d Spring Gully 0
It was business as usual for Shepparton United as it took three points away from its bout with Spring Gully United in the Bendigo Amateur Women’s Soccer League women’s division on Sunday.
Piling on the pressure from the off, the Blues took an early lead and barely faltered for the rest of the contest to emerge 6-0 victors and remain in first position with a staggering goal difference of 119 from 13 games this season.
Coach Sheridan Fairless was pleased with how her side went about getting the three points.
“The girls put in a solid performance on Sunday, I felt our passing game was quite strong and there was some fantastic finishes,” she said.
“The Spring Gully girls have definitely improved since the start of the year, it was a good contest."
League leading goal-scorer Sophie Papalia took only four minutes to make her mark on the game, blasting the ball into the back of the net past flailing Gully custodian Kylie Thomson.
The wicked winger left it a little later for her second, pushing United two ahead in the 32nd minute with yet another classy finish before Caitlin Georgiou rounded out the half with a goal of her own.
Cayla Ruijters pitched in for her 12th goal of the season when she stuck one in the onion bag in the 69th minute, but Georgiou would steal the show in the space of two minutes with a quick double to complete her hat-trick and give the Blues their 13th straight win this season.
Eaglehawk 5 d Shepparton South 1
A second-half spur from Eaglehawk has pushed Shepparton South down the ladder into fifth after a 5-1 defeat at Truscott Reserve on Sunday.
After bowing out to the Bendigo-based outfit 2-0 earlier in the year, South was out to settle the score, but could not match Eaglehawk’s increased tempo as the game progressed, coming away without a point.
After conceding early on, South brought the game back all square less than five minutes later through Alannah Scopelliti but couldn’t hold on to the level pegging until halftime as Charlotte Edlin produced a tidy finish on the brink of half time.
Eaglehawk turned up the heat in the second half, tearing away from South to score three goals and cementing its position in second on the ladder.
Golden City 3 d Shepparton 0
A resilient defensive effort could not quite get the Shepparton women’s side over the line against Golden City on Sunday.
Facing a side ranked six spots ahead on the table, the Reds battled to manufacture one of its best displays on the park, but were ultimately undone against the experienced City outfit 3-0.
