The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program employs local electricians to replace old and inefficient lights with new LED globes, and has received a further boost in this year's state budget.
Nearly $800 million has been promised to a home energy savings package that will boost energy efficiency standards of new and existing homes and expand Victoria's solar and battery rebate scheme.
Victorian-based electrical company and accredited provider Glower is carrying out the free home and business upgrades across the Greater Shepparton region.
Glower director Sam Jeffery said he was thrilled to be able to offer free upgrades and promote more local jobs in Shepparton.
“It’s great that we can make a difference when it comes to people’s electricity bills as well as supporting the shift towards a greener, cleaner future,” Mr Jeffery said.
“It's huge for us and opens the program up to more households and more people.
“It makes it easier for everyone to access.”
VEU started in 2009 and has been running in Shepparton for the past 12 months.
The program is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage efficient electricity and gas investment.
Mr Jeffery said VEU would also provide a range of jobs to the Greater Shepparton community.
“Not only is the program providing a great service, but it also helps to boost the local economy with new jobs,” he said.
“That's not just electricians, it could be marketers, advertising, printers, it filters right through the community.”
Mr Jeffery said the LED lights were energy efficient and would last at least 20 years.
“They're not a product that you're going to find at your local Bunnings,” he said.
“The LEDs that are on offer have a lot less wattage, so they don't use as much energy and reduce your power bills.
“They also don't have a gas or any greenhouse emissions inside of them, so usage lasts a lot "longer and they're a lot brighter.”
Most old lights such as halogens, incandescent and fluorescent globes can be replacedwith LED lights.
Glower also plans to replace shower-heads in the coming weeks and months, with lower water usage heads that still have decent pressure.
