Greater Shepparton’s Salvation Army will run three events that focus on acknowledging the mounting issue of homelessness locally and promoting awareness of it.
They include a care day for people experiencing homelessness, a forum for students and the general public, and a community walk for all.
“These events are an opportunity for the community to come together, learn more and show support for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness,” Ms Farnham said.
NEYS says it is committed to having a stronger presence in the region, aiming to keep the realities of youth homelessness front of mind, not just during the awareness week that runs between August 4 and 10, but always.
“We believe it’s crucial to keep this issue visible and part of everyday conversation,” Ms Farnham said.
“Only then can we start to create meaningful change.”
NEYS has been helping young people aged between 16 and 25 with housing since 2008 and has helped several thousand locally with securing permanent accommodation options.
The service also has its own local accommodation to assist with crisis options for young people.
Shepparton Corps and Community Centre has been part of the Shepparton Community since October 1887.
It provides practical, food and voucher assistance to the community, including shower and washing machine facilities, case management, alcohol and other drug recovery support, community meals, managed community opportunities, as well as the option to explore their spiritual life within a Christian worshipping community.
Salvation Army Homelessness North Vic services include accommodation, case management, assertive outreach support, intensive support and financial assistance, as well as connection and referral to other specialist services.
It strives to deliver its services with dignity, respect and quality of service, and believes that no-one should be without a safe, affordable and secure home.
