DJAARA board chair Trent Nelson spoke at last Saturday’s Welcome to Country and unveiling ceremony sign that recognised Dja Dja Wurrung people as the Traditional Owners of the Black Culvert Rd golf course.
Chris Eeles spoke on behalf of Rochester Golf Club and thanked the DJAARA for their co-operation in allowing the club to access vital irrigation water supply.
Golfers then played a stableford multiplier event. New golfer Shane Connelly combined with the ever-reliable Robert Vise to win on 75 points from Graham Willis and Ian Pollard with 73 points.
Next best were the teams of Louise Eeles and Karen Taylor (71) and David Gebbie and Andy Purdy (69).
Nearest-the-pin winners were Purdy on the third, Neil Coghill with his second shot to the ninth, Bruce Bryant who hit the pin for a great shot on the 16th — unfortunately, he missed the putt — and president Lee Hicks was nearest for his second shot to the 18th.
Last Friday, the women were restricted to nine holes due to persistent rain. Popular member Helen Ingram was overjoyed in winning the monthly medal with 19 stableford points from Jenny Major on a countback from Louise Williams, both on 16 points.
Julie Leahy and Jenny Major were nearest-the-pin winners.
In Wednesday’s nine-hole event over the back nine, regular Elmore visitor Tom Carboon easily won a countback from Peter Anderson, both on 21 points. Carboon had 3, 3, 3 and 4 points from the last four holes and Anderson had no hope of catching that great score. Anderson once again was nearest on the 12th.

Club members and guests enjoyed the most ideal conditions for the scrounge games last week. Both Wednesday and Saturday attracted quality fields with scoring to the hilt.
On Wednesday, the best score on the day belonged to Russell Shawcross, who was in brilliant form to amass a day-high 69 points to take the rink win. Club champion Graham Turner bowled really well to win rink two with 67 points, while Terrill Westwood claimed the final rink on a solid 54 points.
Saturday was a day of unreal sunny weather and the greens were rolling well. Four rinks were in operation with scoring in the low 50s. On rink one, the winner was the mercurial Owen “Smiley” McPhee who, with his emblazoned “CFC” logo on his bowls, waltzed to an honourable victory with 52 points ahead of the consistent Lorraine Appleby with 48 points.
On the next rink, John van den Bosch was again in splendid touch to amass 50 points to win by one shot from lady president Denise Gilmore with 49.
Ian Staig gained an overdue rink after scoring a healthy tally of 50 points to outstay the persistent John Dowie on 45.
On the final rink, the ever reliable John Andrea collected the chocolates with a sensational tally of 45 points to win narrowly from Lois Chugg on 42, while Frank Chugg managed a meagre 19 points — it may have been all the sunshine!
Scrounge will continue while the sun shines and play starts at 1pm on both Wednesday and Saturday, weather permitting.
We are nearing the pennant season and tournament time. The women have a three-bowl triples tournament on Wednesday, September 20, while the 60 and over competition will begin in late August.
The club wishes to acknowledge the input from Kevin Humbert in his work on the preparation of the greens and general commitment to the future of the club in the past 30 years. The committee and members are appreciative of his voluntary services. Thanks Kevin.
Pennant practice and Friday evening barbecues will start shortly.
