Growing up on a farm in central Victoria has informed Ms Brook’s works, with the artist having long been captivated by the simple sights and sounds of the farm and garden.
Ms Brook’s art explores the subtle movements and natural colours that occur all around us — the greys among greens; the reds, pinks and whites within the same flower — all constantly shifting, growing and changing.
In this new collection, Ms Brook captures moments such as her sheep as they pause and glance her way before moving on, and the flowers in a vase just before they begin to wilt.
“Nothing complicated, just one moment at a time,” Ms Brook said.
Strathbogie Shire Mayor Claire Ewart-Kennedy welcomed Ms Brook’s return to the initiative.
“Growing up on a farm in central Victoria, Helen brings a deep understanding of country life to her work,” Cr Ewart-Kennedy said.
“Her gentle observations — a sheep’s glance, a wilting flower — are the kinds of moments we all recognise and treasure in regional communities.”
Ms Brook’s practice spans more than 30 years since graduating with a Bachelor of Art degree in Fine Arts in 1990.
Working across printmaking, painting, sculpture and felting, and exhibiting in a wide range of galleries, art spaces and even paddocks, Ms Brook’s work has featured across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Subtle Movements will be on display in the ARTBOX from Wednesday, July 30 to Monday, August 25 at 60 Hill St, Longwood.
