The school has a diverse student body made up of children from various cultural backgrounds, and the visit provided a valuable opportunity for positive early engagement, particularly for students who are new to Australia.
Sergeant Nathan Trimby emphasised the importance of building these connections early.
“Positive interactions with these kids are vital to foster a good community,” he said.
The two Shepparton police officers spent recess chatting with students about community safety and the important role police played in society.
They also demonstrated the gear they carried daily, including their 10kg Kevlar vests, and gave students a close-up look at tools such as tasers, body-worn cameras and pepper spray.
The students eagerly lined up outside to take turns sitting in the police car, capping off the visit with a thrilling siren send-off.
Students also learned about the different ranks within the police force, with many of the youngsters now aspiring to join the ranks themselves.
“They teach us to be safe … I want to be a junior constable,” student Lineysha Sasikumar said.
The proactive visit was part of an ongoing effort by Shepparton police to build strong, positive relationships within the community by liaising at local schools.
