“This event is important to facilitate a space for connection and awareness and for people to ask questions and people to show up,” Jarvis ‘Chainbreaker’ Atkinson said.
“We all know someone who’s been through issues; domestic violence, homelessness, institutionalised sexual assault, alcohol and other drugs, mental health.”
Organisers Ms Thorpe, Chainbreaker and guest speaker and founder of About Time 4 Justice Jacob Little are encouraging those who need help, those who can help and those who want to help to come along to the whole-day event at Rumbalara Football Netball Club on October 16.
The event is aimed at anyone who is trying to break an addiction cycle, seeking a new start after jail, has survived domestic violence or sexual assault, and anyone ready to change their life in a positive way, or support someone else in their journey, and Chainbreaker said he hoped guests would find it inspiring.
“We want to show people that anything is possible; things can change,” he said.
“The most important thing is, we want someone there who is going through it to have their light-bulb moment — that penny drop — and want to start their recovery and feel supported doing so.”
Guest speakers include Chainbreaker, Mr Little and local addiction and recovery advocates Daniel McKay and Jaymie Paris, with a keynote address from Run That Rehab.
Along with service providers and local support organisations, representatives from several rehabilitation facilities will be there to connect with community members.
A free barbecue and other food options will be provided, as well as sports, including football and boxing, and kids’ activities, including a jumping castle and face painting, and music and entertainment.
“The opposite of addiction is connection,” Chainbreaker said.
“So this event is all about connecting people.”
About Time for Connection is on from 10am to 5pm on Thursday, October 16, at Rumbalara Football Netball Club.
There is no cost to attend and all are welcome.
